"The air raid took placein just 10 minutes and eliminated 100-300 Russians from the battle",PoliticoMay 29tha source recounted the words ofUS President Donald Trump speaks to donors at a fundraiser in Manhattan on May 23.
This information was revealed by Trump when he expressed surprise at the combat performance of F-18 fighter pilots in the clash with a group of Russian mercenaries in February in Syria..
This move by the US President is considered sensitive as White House officials always try to avoid commenting on the battle that killed many Russian citizens in Syria. White House Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah refused to comment on Trump's statement, while affirming that information about this battle is still classified by the Pentagon.
A New York Times report last week revealed some of the first details of the four-hour battle that left between 200 and 300 pro-Syrian government fighters dead.
In this battle, pro-Syrian mercenaries attacked agas plant near the base of US special forces and Kurdish militia in eastern Syria. The US military mobilized air force and artillery fire to repel the attacking force.
While the Russian government confirmed that five of its citizens were killed, the US side said that nearly 200 gunmen died in the fighting.
A leaked audio recording of a communication between members of a Russian mercenary group in March showed that the US military's heavy firepower shredded the formation and did not give them any chance to counterattack, or even just defend to reduce casualties.
According to analysts, it seems that the Russian mercenary group did not know that US special forces were present near the oil field area where they planned to attack, so they suffered the most disastrous defeat since operating in Syria.
The US special forces were also said to have been unaware of the presence of Russians in the attack. The US had informed the Russian military stationed in Syria in advance of the airstrike on the group, but had received no warning from Russia.
