Is the "ping" sound coming from the black box of QZ8501 plane?
Indonesian authorities have just confirmed that the signal recorded yesterday appears to be from the black box of flight QZ8501.
However, bad weather conditions continue to hinder search efforts, preventing rescuers from accessing the black box or lifting the tail of the plane from the water.
According to Mr. SBSupriyadi, an official commanding the search operation off the coast of Java, the area where the signal was emitted is close to the location where the tail of the plane was discovered a day earlier.
Normally, the black box of an aircraft will continue to emit signals for 30 days after the plane crashes. These are also the first signals that rescue forces recorded after 13 days of searching for the plane.
Earlier on January 7, Indonesian authorities announced that they had found the tail section of Flight QZ8501, an important part that usually contains the black boxes that help determine the cause of the accident. As of the 13th day of searching, a total of 48 bodies have been recovered.
Among the 162 passengers on the flight were 155 Indonesians, a French pilot, a British national, three South Koreans, one Malaysian and one Singaporean.
Also today, rescue forces discovered an object suspected to be the nose of the plane, but have not been able to approach it due to bad weather and limited visibility./.
