Not long ago scientists at the Princess Elisabeth research station discovered the presence of one of the largest emperor penguin populations ever known.

Recently, an expedition team decided to make a journey to reach the penguin colony. This expedition team was led by Alain Hubert - a Belgian.

Speaking about the expedition, Alain Hubert said: "I was surprised and amazed beyond what I had ever dreamed and imagined when I saw firsthand the sheer number of emperor penguins living here."

The expedition encountered more than 9,000 emperor penguins, three-quarters of which were chicks. Hubert also said: "You can approach them. When you talk to them, it's like they're listening to you."

The thick ice floes in the fall and winter are where emperor penguins congregate, mate, lay eggs and raise their chicks. When fully grown, emperor penguins can stand up to 1.2m tall and weigh around 38kg.

However, if the ice breaks and disappears right at the beginning of the breeding season, they will not be able to reproduce. In addition, the disappearance of the ice also affects their food source./.
