Destroy all rebels attacking Kabul airport

Fighting between security forces and Taliban gunmen at a building occupied by the gunmen near Kabul International Airport in the Afghan capital on the morning of June 10 ended with the death of seven gunmen.

The attack began at 4:30 a.m. local time when gunmen seized a five-story building under construction near Kabul airport and fired heavy artillery shells at the airport and a nearby US and Afghan military base, Kabul police said in a statement.

The statement said the fighting between security forces and gunmen ended at 9 a.m. when two suicide attackers holed up in the building detonated explosives strapped to their bodies.

Earlier, security forces killed five gunmen.

No security personnel or civilians were injured in the clash. Police also neutralized a minibus packed with explosives parked outside the building, seized five suicide vests and other heavy weapons.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which targeted the military section of the airport that houses NATO and US forces.

It is not yet clear whether there were any casualties or damage at Kabul International Airport. The airport resumed operations at 9 a.m. on June 10 after being temporarily closed for several hours due to the attack./.
