Australian scientists said on August 31 that their study showed that men aged 55-84 with type 2 diabetes have a risk of developing colon cancer twice as high as healthy people of the same age.

The above study was conducted by the above group of authors at the University of Western Australia over 11 years with 1,300 people with type 2 diabetes.

Begun in the 1990s, the study also examined how many of the patients developed cancer.

The research team said this is the first finding to show that people with type 2 diabetes face a higher risk of all types of cancer.

According to the head of the research team, Professor of Medicine Tim Davis of the University of Western Australia, based on the research results, doctors should consider detecting colon cancer as an indispensable part of controlling diabetes.

“Blood sugar testing is an option, but colonoscopy should be done thoroughly and can become an integral part of diabetes management,” says Davis.

On average, one in 12 Australians will be diagnosed with bowel cancer before the age of 85.

If detected early, 90% of cases of this type of cancer can be successfully treated. However, most people with colon cancer find out about the disease when it has already developed.

Colon cancer is currently the second leading cause of death in Australia.
