In a statement released late on September 25, the Education for Nature-Vietnam (ENV) Center said that the Czech Republic is one of the transit points for transnational rhino horn smuggling rings. Last year, authorities there seized 24 white rhino horns and punished 16 suspects in an international rhino horn trafficking ring to Asia.
In keeping with its commitment to end the slaughter of rhinos for their horns, just before World Rhino Day (September 22), Dvur Kralove Zoo (Czech Republic) destroyed more than 50 kg of rhino horns. At the same time, the Slovak Republic also destroyed a stockpile of rhino horns at Bojnice Zoo.
Mr. Premysl Rabas, Director of Dvur Kralove Zoo, emphasized that consuming rhino horn means supporting criminal networks and poachers. The consequences of transnational rhino horn trafficking have caused many forest rangers to sacrifice their lives and thousands of rhinos to be brutally killed.
Zoo Director Dvur Kralove also affirmed that rhino horns do not have the effects that people mistakenly believe. And, the structure of rhino horns is similar to human nails and hair, so they cannot be used to treat diseases. Therefore, people need to consider the consequences of their actions.
