US scientists have discovered a vaccine that could help prevent tooth decay permanently. A team at the Forsyth Institute is developing a vaccine against the bacteria mutans streptococci that causes tooth decay. As the bacteria digest food, they produce lactic acid that erodes tooth enamel, leading to tooth decay.

The new cavity vaccine “teaches” the immune system to produce antibodies that destroy enzymes that normally allow bacteria to attach to teeth. Unable to attach to tooth enamel, the bacteria are swept away by saliva, thus protecting teeth. Mice given the vaccine did not develop cavities. Human trials have shown the vaccine to have a similar effect.

According to the Daily Mail, citing the research results, the vaccine will eventually be used for children under one year old, when their teeth are still developing. This vaccine can be prepared in the form of nasal drops, thereby helping children and adults avoid painful injections. Experts hope that the new vaccine will be on the market in the next few years.
