Finding a development direction for a friendly fuel in Vietnam
Scientists confirm: using compressed natural gas (CNG) instead of gasoline saves 30% of fuel costs and protects the environment. Vietnam is a potential market for this type of compressed natural gas.
The workshop “Focusing on developing compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure in major cities” took place yesterday, May 25, in Hanoi with the participation of the Government, private operators from Thailand, Pakistan, Malaysia, Singapore and technology companies.
Nowadays, the number of vehicles is increasing, resulting in the emission of gases into the environment, causing air pollution, which in the long run will have a significant impact on people's lives. CNG is an environmentally friendly compressed natural gas that has been tested in Vietnam for nearly two years.
Use compressed natural gas instead of gasoline to reduce environmental pollution.
Currently, 400 taxis and 100 private cars in Ho Chi Minh City and Vung Tau are using compressed natural gas. In Hanoi, the Dau Khi taxi company is also using this fuel. CNG is not only used in the transportation industry but it is also aimed at other industries.
The price of gasoline and oil in the world is increasing, oil fields are gradually depleted, the number of vehicles increases every year in each country. In Vietnam, in the past 10 years, the number of vehicles has increased 4 times, accounting for 98% of the population owning motorbikes. Not to mention the amount of emissions into the environment from motorbikes, the amount of emissions from cars increases every year, also contributing significantly to the increasingly polluted air environment.
According to the assessment of the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, 70% of urban environmental pollution is caused by traffic. Vehicles operating in cities are mostly "old" and therefore emit an amount of NO2 exceeding the permitted level. Therefore, the Government has paid attention to the issue of improving air quality, strategies for renewable energy use and energy saving, including vehicles or businesses having to pay pollution fees.
Vietnam is a potential market for compressed natural gas (CNG). However, we do not have much experience in building production plants, with gas pipelines to cities, highways or further to rural and mountainous areas.
In 2004, the demand was 3.3 billion m3 of gas; in 2010, it was 8.6 billion m3 of gas; in 2015, the demand increased to 19-20 billion m3 of gas; in 2025, it will increase to 27-28 billion m3 of gas. Due to the annual increase in demand, there will be a shortage of CNG compressed gas. Therefore, the project of CNG gas producers needs to be implemented quickly from now on. However, we are facing problems with capital and experience for the production process.
At the forum, Mr. Nguyen Si Thang, Chairman of the Vietnam Gas Association, proposed to the Government: “It is necessary to develop strong policies to create conditions for CNG production plants to come into operation soon; build CNG transfer stations to serve the transportation and industrial sectors well; reduce CNG import tax when we cannot produce it yet; provide medium-term and short-term capital with low interest rates for businesses participating in the CNG supply market.”
