Research by scientists at St. Michael's Hospital (Canada) found that by eating a serving of beans every day, people can reduce bad cholesterol by about 5%.
Lead researcher Dr John Sievenpiper said lowering bad cholesterol would lead to a 5-6% reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease. The study found that beans have a low glycemic index (usually foods that are broken down slowly) and tend to reduce or replace animal protein and “bad” fats in some dishes. The study was published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
