Eating an apple a day helps prevent aging |
Researchers at the University of Iowa say that apple and green tomato peels contain a substance that can “rejuvenate” tired, aging muscles after just 2 months of treatment.
Researchers hope the discovery could lead to new drugs for older people, helping them stay healthy and mobile longer.
Age-related muscle atrophy is caused by the ATF4 protein changing the structure of the gene, causing the muscles to “starve” of the proteins needed to maintain strength, leading to loss of muscle mass and loss of muscle strength.
But scientists have found two natural compounds that can reduce the activity of ATF4.
One of the two substances is ursolic acid, found in apple peel, and the other is tomatidine, found in green tomatoes.
Initial experiments on aging mice showed that ursolic acid and tomatidine “significantly reduced age-related muscle weakness and atrophy,” increasing muscle mass by 10% and muscle quality by 30% after just two months.
“Based on these results, ursolic acid and tomatidine show great promise as tools to combat muscle weakness and atrophy associated with aging,” added study leader Professor Christopher Adams.
“By reducing ATF4 activity, ursolic acid and tomatidine allow muscles to recover from the effects of aging.”
