Signs you need to eat more protein

Craving sweets, hair loss and frequent illness are signs that you are lacking protein.

1. Sweet cravings

One of the first signs that your body is lacking protein is craving sweets and never feeling like you have enough to eat, says Dawn Jackson Blatner, author of The Flexitarian Diet.

One of the most important functions of protein is to keep blood sugar stable. When you are deficient in protein, blood sugar will be shared to all parts of the body, stimulating you to quickly replenish sugar, so you feel like eating sweets, like candy. A breakfast with a little cereal will give you energy immediately but then quickly return to the original state.

Therefore, to get enough protein, you should add foods such as beans, meat, and shrimp to your daily diet.

2. Vague mind

Balanced blood sugar levels are essential for your ability to concentrate. When you don’t have enough protein, your blood sugar levels fluctuate. Blatner says you’ll feel a little foggy, like you can’t perform well because you don’t have enough protein to fuel your brain.

If you are consuming a lot of fast foods like cookies or bread then you should stop this habit as they will burn your mental energy, leaving you feeling sluggish and lethargic.

3. Hair loss

Protein affects all cells, including hair follicles. If your hair follicles are healthy, they won’t break off, even if you pull them or expose them to the sun or wind. When there are too few nutrients on your scalp, your strands will start to thin. This can also be a sign of other problems, like thyroid problems.

4. You feel weakt

We all know that protein is essential for muscle structure. Without enough of it, your muscles can gradually shrink over time. As a result, you feel weak and can't perform as well as before.

5. Frequent illness

Your arms and legs aren't the only parts of your body that need protein. Protein is essential for building blocks of our immune system. So if you find yourself catching colds or infections more often than others (despite being in good health), it could be due to a protein deficiency.

Another sign is that you often have chafed skin (the edges of your fingernails). If your skin is unhealthy due to lack of protein, you will see cracks and tears in your skin (like chafed skin), which will leave your body vulnerable to germs and lead to infection.
