Hackers attack hundreds of banks, steal 300 million USD
Hackers have used malware to launch a series of attacks on the computer systems of major banks around the world.
The New York Times of the US on February 14 quoted a source from the cybersecurity company Kaspersky Lab as saying that hackers sent emails containing malware to a list of employees. After the employees opened the emails, the malware was on their computers and they could penetrate the internal network systems of the banks.
The hackers then proceeded to withdraw money from accounts at automated teller machines (ATMs) at any location. Using this trick, the hacker group is said to have withdrawn $300 million from ATMs.
According to the newspaper, the hacker group is believed to come from Russia, China and Europe. The attacks mainly targeted banks in Russia, Japan, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the US./
