Relying on car tricks on TikTok can damage your car

Automotive experts warn that more than 80% of car tips and tricks videos on Tiktok are unreliable, viewers need to be selective.

TikTok has more than 876 million car tips and tricks videos, and viewers on the platform often find the advice helpful. However, AutoTrader analyzed the videos and found that many of them are unreliable.

Be careful with car tips on Tiktok

When it comes to car cleaning tips, car experts say many of the videos may seem clever, but 81% of them could be harmful to your car. Some suggest using toothpaste or coconut oil to remove stains, while others recommend using a mop to wash your car or attaching a toilet brush to a drill to scrub your car's carpets.

Automotive experts warn that these methods can scratch the paint surface, remove protective coatings or leave more dirt behind. So instead of following car cleaning tips on TikTok, use the right car care products.

But car repair tips and tricks videos are even more dangerous, with AutoTrader finding that 90% of them should be avoided unless you’re a skilled auto mechanic. Many videos show TikTokers sharing how to fix a scratch or fix a car, but they often skip key steps, making it seem easier than it actually is.

If you attempt to repair it without the right tools or enough experience, you could make the problem worse… and end up paying more for a certified mechanic to fix it later.

Not all advice on TikTok is bad

AutoTrader says 72% of its car maintenance videos provide reliable information. Many are made by automotive experts and cover basics like checking shock absorbers, preparing your car for winter, and monitoring oil and tire pressure. These videos help drivers stay on top of regular maintenance, preventing bigger problems in the future.

Driving tips are also valuable, especially for new drivers. About 68% of these videos offer practical advice, often from certified driving instructors. The videos break down complex skills into quick, easy-to-understand tips.

TikTok is a great short-form video platform for entertainment, but not all advice and tips are trustworthy. Remember that many viral car tips exist to attract attention, not to actually help drivers. So the best approach? Get advice from automotive experts before trying anything yourself.
