On July 7, the World Health Organization (WHO) called on countries to be especially vigilant when easing restrictions to reopen, to avoid losing the achievements in fighting the epidemic that have been achieved in the past.

At a press conference, Director of the World Health Organization's Health Emergencies Program, Mr. Michael Ryan, emphasized that countries with low Covid-19 vaccination rates that loosen their restrictions too quickly will create a "toxic mix" that facilitates the spread of the virus.

“We have seen in the last six months that countries have seen cases increase because there is not enough vaccine. I hope that in Europe we will not see hospitals overwhelmed and health workers exhausted. This virus is evolving and changing. We need to be very vigilant at this time, not to let the progress we have made go to waste,” said Michael Ryan.

According to Mr. Ryan, this is a time to be especially vigilant, but countries must also make their own decisions about lifting restrictions in accordance with the epidemic situation. The World Health Organization official also urged countries that are considering or have started to deploy Covid-19 vaccination for children aged 12-15 to reconsider this option. Instead, countries can share available vaccine doses with the COVAX mechanism to support vaccination of the elderly and health workers in low-income countries.

The call came on the day that the global death toll from Covid-19, according to the World Health Organization, surpassed 4 million, a milestone the agency called “tragic.” Official statistics show that the global death toll from the pandemic has passed 4 million, more than 18 months after it began, but the actual number could be much higher, according to the World Health Organization.
