Sergey Badamishin, Karaulova's lawyer, provided the information to TASS on November 17, reiterating his defense that Karaulova was innocent. The prosecutor and defense attorney have completed the submission of evidence in the case. According to the plan, after questioning Kraulova, both sides will have the opportunity to present additional information. After that, the court will close the investigation and set a trial date.

According to the indictment, Karaulova decided to join IS after becoming a member of the Badr group, which aims to carry out subversive activities in Syria or Europe through suicide bombings. On a social networking site, the young woman contacted an unknown person to join a small group led by a man named Abdul Khakin.

Varvara Karaulova left home on May 27, 2015, telling her parents she was going to university and secretly traveled to Istanbul. On June 4, Turkish Interpol arrested Karaulova and 12 other Russian citizens as they tried to cross Turkey’s southern border with Syria to join the ranks of IS fighters. On June 12, a flight from Istanbul brought Karaulova back to Russia.

Karaulova was arrested on suspicion of links to the Islamic State terrorist group on October 28, 2015, and formally charged on November 10./.
