The Supreme Court officially apologized publicly to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chan.

The Supreme People's Court representative said: "The Court is the agency and unit directly implementing the public apology and compensation."

On the morning of April 17, at the People's Committee of Nghia Trung Commune, Viet Yen District, Bac Giang Province, the Supreme People's Court in Hanoi held a public apology and correction session for the wrongly convicted person, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chan, according to the Law on State Compensation Liability.

The Supreme Court’s apology received the attention of many people in Nghia Trung commune. From early morning, many people in the commune, from the elderly to the young, filled the commune People’s Committee hall. Many people left their daily farm work to attend the ceremony.

Local authorities and representatives of Bac Giang Provincial Police were also present at the apology to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chan - who was wrongly sentenced to 10 years.

Mr. Ngo Hong Phuc presented flowers to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chan at the public apology.

At the ceremony, Mr. Ngo Hong Phuc - Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court of Appeal read the public apology.

In his public apology, Mr. Phuc reiterated the content of the incident. Accordingly, the murder case occurred in Me village, Nghia Trung commune, Viet Yen district, Bac Giang province in 2013, and the victim was identified as Nguyen Thi Hoan.

The authorities convicted Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chan of murder. The court of first instance sentenced Mr. Chan to life in prison. After the verdict, Mr. Chan repeatedly claimed his innocence and appealed to the appellate court.

The Supreme People's Court of Appeal rejected Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chan's appeal.

After 10 years of wrongful imprisonment, thanks to the efforts of his family and the authorities, the real perpetrator of the case, Ly Nguyen Chung, turned himself in and confessed to killing Ms. Hoan more than 10 years ago.

After identifying the real culprit, the sentences against Mr. Chan were successively overturned.

On April 18, 2014, the Supreme People's Court received Mr. Chan's compensation application under the Law on State Compensation Liability.

Mr. Phuc said that Mr. Chan is eligible for compensation. Mr. Ngo Hong Phuc also affirmed: "The court is the agency and unit directly implementing the public apology and compensation."

Mr. Phuc also said that in addition to the public apology, the Supreme People's Court will publish a public correction for three consecutive months in Cong Ly and Bac Giang newspapers.

Mr. Phuc also said that the Supreme Court will continue to negotiate and coordinate with relevant agencies to resolve compensation for Mr. Chan according to the law.

At the ceremony, Mr. Than Van Hoat - Mr. Chan's legal representative also represented the family to acknowledge the noble actions of the prosecution agencies towards Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chan at present.

“Today, Mr. Chan’s family has been cleared of their sins before the village and commune. Previously, the family was recorded in the golden book because their father was a martyr. After Mr. Chan went to prison, he suddenly received a blackboard. Now we have opened our eyes and faces,” Mr. Hoat said.

Mr. Hoat also hopes that the authorities will soon compensate Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chan for his wrongful conviction.

Sharing about the public apology, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chan said that this morning he woke up early to burn incense for his ancestors. Last night, Mr. Chan's sleep was also very fitful, just waiting for morning. Children of his neighbors also came to congratulate Mr. Chan from early morning./.
