American company Arconic has come up with the idea of a futuristic skyscraper that can clean itself and remove dust from the air.

US-based materials science company Arconic has designed a 3-mile-tall skyscraper model made from 3D-printed materials that can clean itself and remove airborne pollutants, Seeker reports. It's part of the company's "The Jetsons" campaign to envision what the world might look like in 2062.

The team of engineers at Arconic work with futurists to predict what architecture and technology will look like in the next few decades. It is likely that 3D printing materials will allow humans to create structures with complex shapes in the near future.

The materials used to build skyscrapers in 45 years may be under development or available today. For example, Arconic introduced a self-cleaning coating technology called EcoClean to conventional glass windows in 2011.

“Self-cleaning coatings add aesthetic appeal to a building, provide maintenance benefits, and reduce the amount of contaminants in the surrounding environment,” said Sherri McCleary, materials scientist at Arconic.

Natural light and steam mixed with the EcoClean cleaning coating will release free radicals. Free radicals pull pollutants from the air, breaking them down and removing them along with dirt that sticks to the walls of the house, just like dead skin on the human body.

Arconic is developing a retractable, all-glass balcony, the brainchild of designer Bloomframe. The robotic balcony model is currently on display at several trade shows and will soon be available on the market.

According to McCleary, 3D printed building materials provide more options for architects in the future. They will design skyscrapers that can withstand strong winds and harsh climates. In addition to the skyscraper idea, Arconic also designs and develops flying cars with lightweight frames and aircraft-like wings.
