December 17, 2014 14:33

For the past 12 years, Thailand has not won the Southeast Asian championship.

At 7:00 p.m. on December 17, at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok (Thailand), the home team will meet Malaysia in the first leg of the final match of the Southeast Asian Football Championship - AFF Suzuki Cup 2014.

In the semi-finals, Thailand defeated the Philippines after two matches (0-0 draw at Rizal Memorial Stadium - Manila with one less player and won 3-0 in the second leg).

Meanwhile, the Malaysian team under the leadership of coach Dollah bin Salleh created a big surprise in this year's tournament when they defeated the Vietnamese team (losing 1-2 in Shah Alam and winning 4-2 right at My Dinh Stadium).

Coach Kiatisak (red) and the Thai team are preparing for the final match of the AFF Cup 2014.

Three days after the first leg of the final, the second leg between Malaysia and Thailand will be held at Bukit Jalil Stadium (Kuala Lumpur) at 7:00 p.m. on December 20.

A force in Southeast Asian football, Thailand won the AFF Cup in 1996 (defeating Malaysia 1-0), 2000 and 2002. But they are now on a 12-year trophy drought, having lost to Singapore in the finals in 2007 and 2012 and to Vietnam in 2008.

As for the Malaysian team, they will be aiming for their second title in four years after winning the 2010 tournament with Safiq Rahim, Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, Safee Sali and Amri Yahyah all still in the squad.

The two teams Thailand and Malaysia have met 11 times in previous Southeast Asian championships, with 6 wins belonging to the team currently led by coach Kiatisuk Senamuang.
