Crayfish - a dangerous species - are flooding into Vietnam from China
Many wholesalers said that each time they import tons of crayfish to Vietnam, they sell out completely.
Crawfish, also known as crawfish, is a popular type of shrimp. They are larger than a finger, about 30-35 per kilogram. Their meat is firm, sweet, and chewy like tiger prawns. According to sources, the price of a shrimp is about 350,000-500,000 VND per kilogram.
The price of crayfish is cheap because the goods are imported from China by large suppliers, each batch is up to a ton. This type is favored by many restaurants and shops in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, so it sells quite quickly.
Live crayfish are still imported to Vietnam. |
A survey showed that crayfish are widely sold online at retail prices of 350,000-500,000 VND per kilogram. Many establishments also said that crayfish are caught in Vietnamese waters. However, in reality, most of them are imported from China and the US.
Although this type of shrimp is popular with consumers, in Joint Circular No. 27 between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, crayfish is classified as an invasive alien species, so it cannot be produced or traded in Vietnam.
Aquaculture Research Institute I, the only unit licensed to import this shrimp species for research, said that the institute has recommended not to develop this shrimp species for many years.
The Directorate of Fisheries has also directed the collection and destruction of illegal breeders because they are foreign creatures, have no high economic value and also destroy crops. They often dig holes and damage dikes.
Because they are omnivorous, crayfish have the ability to adapt well to the environment, leading to the possible spread of fungal pathogens, white spot disease virus in shrimp as well as some parasites.
