Honoring extraordinary willpower
(Baonghean) -Was Vietnamese sports in 2014 a success or a failure? The answer is left to professional managers, because the biggest criterion that we mentioned in the article for the column "See - Think - Think" at the end of 2014 is to talk about the great contributions of athletes to Vietnamese sports in the past year. They are the athletes who do not hesitate to face difficulties, shed sweat, tears and sometimes blood on the training field, when competing with a burning desire to achieve the highest results, to bring glory to themselves, and at the same time make Vietnamese sports famous in the international arena. Besides, typical sports events always have the power to spread to social life and have a positive impact on society.
This year, the new criteria for voting for typical sports event nominations and typical athletes will not include the participation of specialized management agencies, but will be nominated and voted by reporters. There are up to 3 sports events in the top 10 typical events in the fields of culture, sports, and tourism of Vietnam in 2014: the 7th National Sports Festival - 2014 successfully organized with the participation of 65 provinces, cities, and sectors, with 57 national records and 158 records of the festival broken; Vietnamese sports achieved excellent results at the 2nd Asian Para Games 2014 held in Incheon (Korea), with the achievement of 10th place out of 43 participating countries; Athlete Hoang Xuan Vinh (shooting) set a world record in the 10m air pistol event and won a gold medal at the World Shooting Cup held in the US last March.
With the individual title, the election of the most outstanding athlete is also "making it difficult" for the Organizing Committee, because in 2014, many Vietnamese athletes competed successfully in international and regional sports competitions such as: Nguyen Thi Anh Vien (swimming) with 3 gold medals, 1 silver medal at the 2nd Asian Youth Games in 2013, 3 gold medals, 2 silver medals, 1 bronze medal breaking the SEA Games record at the 27th SEA Games in 2013; Nguyen Ha Thanh (gymnastics) - Grand Prix Osijek Gymnastics 2013; Hoang Xuan Vinh (shooting) won the first gold medal for Vietnamese shooting at the 2013 World Cup; Le Quang Liem - World Blitz Chess Champion in 2013; Nguyen Tien Minh won a bronze medal at the 2013 World Badminton Championships...
In addition to the athletes who achieved high results and brought new status to Vietnamese sports mentioned above, it is also necessary to honor athletes with extraordinary determination to overcome illness to compete. They are examples worth learning and following. That is the "barefoot queen" Pham Thi Binh. The gold medal that Binh won at the 2014 National Sports Festival in the women's marathon (42 km) in the condition of having a congenital heart disease and being advised not to compete says it all. The image of the petite 25-year-old girl of the Quang Ngai delegation competing on the 42 km track always had an ambulance and a team of doctors and nurses right behind to be ready to intervene if an incident occurred.
With her extraordinary will and determination, she overcame her fear of heart disease, forever rekindled her love for athletics and brought glory to the Quang Ngai sports delegation before announcing her retirement. At the end of the year, fans across the country received good news when cyclist Nguyen Thi Tha (An Giang) was discharged from Viet Duc Hospital (Hanoi) to return home on December 25. The young female cyclist from An Giang unfortunately had an accident while competing at the National Sports Festival (cycling event held in Hoa Binh), and had to be hospitalized for nearly 2 months and has just now recovered. Tha's return (although she cannot walk normally and has to sit in a wheelchair) is a good sign of the young athlete's health progress. The amount of time she had to stay in the hospital was the amount of time Tha always kept in mind that she had to overcome her injury to regain her health and return to normal life.
