On October 3, the second working day of the 8th Conference of the 12th Party Central Committee, the Central Committee reached a high consensus (100%) to introduce comrade Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Party Central Committee, to be elected by the National Assembly to hold the position of President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam at the 6th Session of the 14th National Assembly.

Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations Don Tuan Phong said that the Central Committee's recommendation of the General Secretary for the National Assembly to elect as President was a wise decision. Because General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is a leader who possesses all the necessary elements of a head of state, this is also a breakthrough in the personnel work of the highest leaders of the Party and State.

“From the perspective of foreign affairs, the General Secretary being the President will be favorable. When the head of the Party is also the head of the State, the work of leading the country's socio-economic development in general will be more favorable in the new situation,” said Mr. Don Tuan Phong.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Viet Thong, General Secretary of the Central Theoretical Council, since the 11th and 12th National Party Congresses, the Party has discussed this issue. The General Secretary who is also the President will benefit in many aspects, both domestically and internationally.

Furthermore, the Party documents have instructed and decided that the Party Secretary at all levels is also the Chairman of the People's Council, and this will soon be implemented at the commune, district and provincial levels. This time, implementing it at the Central level will further create synchronization in the spirit of recent Party Resolutions, especially Central Resolutions 6 and 7.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Huong - former member of the Party Central Committee, former Deputy Head of the Central Organizing Committee, said that this is the right time to implement the plan of the General Secretary as President. The General Secretary - President mechanism has been supported by Mr. Nguyen Dinh Huong since the 7th Congress. Moreover, looking at the broader picture, socialist countries such as China and Laos also have this mechanism. Obviously, we cannot apply the same model to every country that implements it, but if international friends do things right and well, Vietnam should also learn from their experiences to apply them well.

Many cadres, party members and people also believe that the General Secretary's appointment as President will create very good conditions for the Party and State's anti-corruption campaign to continue to achieve high efficiency in the coming time.

Lieutenant General Khuat Duy Tien, former Commander of the Central Highlands Army Corps, shared: "Not only me but many officers find this reasonable."

Mr. Vu Mao - former member of the Party Central Committee, former Head of the National Assembly Office also said that the people's trust in the General Secretary is increasingly strong, this will be the ripe time for the Central Committee to implement the model of the General Secretary as President.

"I believe if we do well and make legal and regulatory additions to the Party Charter, the results will be huge," said Mr. Vu Mao.

Ms. Phan Thi Diem Trinh (in Tu Lien ward, Tay Ho district, Hanoi) emphasized that with 100% of delegates supporting, it shows that the trust for the General Secretary is absolute. Therefore, the introduction of comrade Nguyen Phu Trong to be elected as President is completely worthy.

"I believe that with his new position, comrade Nguyen Phu Trong will bring the country to better integration and development," said Ms. Diem Trinh.

Mr. Tran Van Tung (Ward 5, Ca Mau City, Ca Mau Province) expressed his agreement with the Central Executive Committee's decision to nominate the General Secretary for the National Assembly to elect as President. According to him, recently, the General Secretary has given strong and close direction in the work of preventing and combating corruption.

Through the handling of major cases, the trust of the masses, party members and people nationwide has been strengthened. He believes and expects that the General Secretary will do better in the work of preventing and combating corruption as well as contributing to domestic and foreign affairs.
