General Secretary meets with President of Indian National Congress

On the afternoon of November 20, at the National Congress Party Headquarters, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong met with National Congress Party President, Ms. Sonia Gandhi.

Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi warmly welcomed the General Secretary and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to India, assessing that the visit demonstrates the close and trusting relationship between the two countries.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong highly appreciated and congratulated India on the great achievements it has made in recent years under the leadership of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government with the Congress Party as the core.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong affirmed that the Vietnamese people always remember the valuable support and assistance that the Indian people gave Vietnam in the past resistance war for independence as well as in the current national construction and development; and always appreciate the contributions and good feelings of the late Indian Prime Minister Razip Gandhi towards the relationship between the two countries and the two Parties.

The General Secretary affirmed the long-standing traditional friendship between Vietnam and India, expressing his delight at the positive developments in bilateral relations in recent years, with enhanced political relations, increasingly substantive defense-security relations, and improved economic relations.

The General Secretary hopes that this visit to the Republic of India will expand and deepen the strategic partnership between Vietnam and India, creating momentum to promote bilateral relations in the coming time.

The General Secretary stressed that the Communist Party of Vietnam attaches importance to and is eager to promote relations with Indian political parties, especially the Congress Party, which plays a pivotal role in the coalition government, considering it a very important political foundation for relations between the two countries; suggesting that in the coming time, the two Parties should increase delegation exchanges, share experiences in party building, national governance and cooperate at multilateral political party forums.

President Sonia Gandhi expressed her delight at Vietnam's great achievements and rapid development in nearly three decades of renovation and believed that the Communist Party of Vietnam would lead the Vietnamese people to build the country to become increasingly rich and prosperous.

President Sonia Gandhi highly appreciated the Vietnam-India relationship that has been nurtured by President Ho Chi Minh and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and generations of leaders and people of the two countries; expressed her joy at the developments in cooperation between the two countries, especially in the fields of trade and investment; and hoped that the two countries would strengthen cooperation in economics and information technology.

President Sonia Gandhi expressed her wish to strengthen the relationship between the two parties, promote exchanges between mass organizations of the parties, exchange leadership and management experiences and create a political basis for the relationship between the two countries.

On this occasion, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong respectfully invited President Sonia Gandhi to visit Vietnam. The President thanked him and happily accepted the invitation./.
