General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong: Hope elected delegates will devote themselves to the country and the people
“Voters and I hope that all candidates elected as National Assembly and People's Council deputies will wholeheartedly serve the country and the people, and fully perform their duties and responsibilities as prescribed by the Constitution and laws.”
PV: Could you please tell us what your expectations are for elected representatives and elected agencies in the coming term?
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong:I believe that voters, like me, hope that all candidates elected as National Assembly and People's Council deputies will wholeheartedly serve the country and the people, fully perform their duties and responsibilities as prescribed by the Constitution and laws. That is, they must be absolutely loyal to the Fatherland, to the people, to the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam; fully perform the responsibilities of National Assembly deputies and People's Council deputies at all levels. In general, they must perform the responsibilities of a person who is elected by the people to represent the people in managing the country and society.

PV:Dear General Secretary, what is the role of elected bodies and elected representatives in continuing to build and perfect a truly socialist rule-of-law state of the people, by the people, and for the people?
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong:It is true that the responsibility of the People's Council, as well as the National Assembly in the upcoming term, is to properly perform the functions and tasks of elected bodies as prescribed in the Constitution and laws.
The National Assembly must fulfill its responsibility as the highest legislative body, the highest representative body of the people, the highest authority with three functions: legislation, supreme supervision and decision on important issues of the country.
I would also like to emphasize that we must do a good job of parliamentary foreign affairs in the current conditions, and have good relations with parliaments around the world. I believe that each elected delegate will fully realize his or her role and responsibility in perfecting the organizational system of our country's political system in general, including the National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels in particular.
PV:On this occasion, what message does the General Secretary send to voters and the people of the country?
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong:First of all, I would like to thank the voters and the people of the country for their great response to this election. This is the 14th time we have held a general election nationwide. But I think this is the largest election ever with more than 69 million voters going to the polls to elect 500 National Assembly deputies, nearly 4,000 provincial and municipal People's Council deputies; nearly 25,000 district People's Council deputies; 294,055 commune People's Council deputies.
Voters have recently participated in the entire process of introduction, consultation, and election campaigning. The atmosphere in the past few days has been very exciting, surely today everyone will go to the polls in large numbers, choosing the most deserving person among the deserving people so that we can choose the best representatives of the people, performing the functions and tasks as mentioned above.
PV:Thank you very much, General Secretary!
