Nghe An is a province with a large population, with more than 3.1 million people. The current population growth rate is approximately 1.13%. Although population and family planning activities are regularly and actively implemented, from communication activities to reproductive health care and family planning campaigns, recently, population and family planning work in Nghe An has had major fluctuations. In the first 8 months of 2011, the number of new births increased by nearly 2,000 children, of which the third child and above increased by 3% compared to the same period in 2010. Nghe An is currently one of the 10 provinces with the highest birth rate in the country. In particular, the number of women of childbearing age accounts for a high proportion, the rate of third child births is increasing rapidly. In particular, the issue of gender imbalance at birth is at an alarming level, 123 boys/100 girls. These are the major challenges facing the Population/Family Planning work in Nghe An in the coming time. Without the focus on strengthening and strong direction from all levels and sectors and timely appropriate policies, the targets of the 2011 Ordinance on Population and Family Planning and the targets set by the Resolution of the Provincial Party Congress will be difficult to achieve.

At the meeting, members of the Working Group contributed their opinions on the province's population and family planning tasks in the coming time. In particular, urgently perfecting the activities of the Population and Family Planning Steering Committee from the province to the commune, ward and town levels; promoting and diversifying propaganda activities. Mobilizing all levels, sectors and organizations to continue to coordinate better in implementing population and family planning work. Accelerating the progress of projects such as Population control in coastal and coastal areas, and religious areas; prenatal and newborn screening; Pre-marital health counseling; Launching and effectively implementing the National Action Month on Population (December 2011) and activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Population sector.
