On August 27, French law enforcement agencies officially filed charges against International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Christine Lagarde in connection with a multi-million euro lawsuit in which the female politician was the central figure while serving as French Finance Minister.
The French Court of Justice has decided to open a formal investigation into Ms. Lagarde. However, she said she would not resign as IMF Managing Director over the allegations, and asked her lawyers to appeal, calling the decision to investigate her "inappropriate."
As finance minister, in 2008, Ms. Lagarde referred the long-running dispute between French tycoon Bernard Tapie and Credit Lyonnais bank to a panel.
As a result, the panel awarded Mr Tapie €400 million in damages, a decision she later ratified.
Ms. Lagarde has always denied all allegations of abuse of power and position. She has had to appear in court many times, while her private home has been searched by the police for evidence./.
