The Expanded Immunization Program (EPI) has been implemented nationwide since 1985. After more than 25 years of implementation, EPI has made an important contribution to changing the disease structure in Vietnamese children. In Nghe An since 1995, after 100% of communes and wards across the province were covered by the EPI program, the rate of children under 1 year old vaccinated has continuously increased over the years. From 1995 to present, this rate has always been maintained above 90% at the provincial level, contributing to the successful implementation of the immunization program of the country and Vietnam, which was internationally recognized for polio eradication in 2000.

The rate of children under 1 year old taking OPV3 is over 90%, tetanus vaccination for pregnant women is over 80%, contributing to achieving and maintaining the results of eliminating neonatal tetanus, controlling and moving towards eliminating measles, reducing the rate of hepatitis B virus infection in children under 5 years old, significantly reducing the rate of diphtheria and whooping cough. Expanding the coverage of Japanese encephalitis vaccines to 20/20 districts and cities has raised the rate of children receiving 3 doses to over 90%. In the period of 2013-2015, Nghe An strives to fully implement the EPI program in the whole province, minimizing the rate of morbidity and mortality due to infectious diseases for which vaccines have been administered.
