Russian President threatens to withdraw from European Court of Human Rights

August 15, 2014 09:36

Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 14 accused the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) of politicizing many of its judgments, and said that Moscow could theoretically renounce its jurisdiction in the court.

Ông Putin cho rằng ECHR chỉ hoàn thành
Mr. Putin said that the ECHR only completed

Speaking at a meeting with Russian lawmakers in the Crimean resort city of Yalta, President Putin said the ECHR had performed its role very poorly compared to the original purpose for which it was established and "fulfilled only some political functions."

"If this continues further, it is possible" that Russia will withdraw from the ECHR, Interfax news agency quoted Mr. Putin as saying, adding that "so far this issue remains on the agenda."

On July 31, the Russian Justice Ministry criticized an ECHR ruling requiring Moscow to pay $2.6 billion in compensation to shareholders of the defunct oil company Yukos, calling it an unfair ruling./.
