President Obama: The Golden Age of Newspapers Is Over

August 1, 2013 17:21

US President Barack Obama says we need to accept the reality that the golden age of print journalism will never return.

“The American media industry faces new, difficult realities and we need to admit that the era of print is truly over,” President Barack Obama said during a visit to the Amazon fulfillment center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on July 31.

Before giving a speech to Amazon employees, the US president had a special interview with David Blum, editor of Amazon Kindle, owner of the Kindle line of e-reading tablets.

In the conversation, saved as an e-book called Kindle Singles Interview, President Obama said that the American press could not avoid the general crisis of the world press industry in recent years, with the number of printed copies and advertising revenue continuously decreasing, and many newspapers having to stop publishing or switch completely to electronic versions.

At the end of 2012, Newsweek magazine announced it would stop printing after 79 years of operation, and recently PC World, a famous magazine about technology and computers, officially announced that it would stop publishing at the end of July.

“It used to be that you could make a good living working for a local newspaper, but today few print newspapers are profitable enough to pay you as well as other jobs,” Mr. Obama said.

“What we need to realize is that the golden age of print is never coming back.”

Amazon Kindle said the presidential interview is the first installment of a new Kindle Singles Interview series, with interviews available as e-books and downloads athttp://www.amazon.com/kindlesingles
