President Obama takes oath of office for second term
On January 20, US President Barack Obama was officially sworn in for his second term at a small, private ceremony in the Blue Room of the White House.
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Roberts presided over the ceremony for Mr Obama to resume the position he has held since 2009 when he became the first black president of the United States.
President Obama's inauguration took place under the witness of his family.
President Obama's second inauguration took place over three days from January 20-22, 2013 with approximately 600,000-800,000 people attending, including festival activities.
The number of people attending Mr. Obama's inauguration this year is far below the record number of 1.8 million people in January 2009 when Mr. Obama was the first black politician to become the owner of the White House.
The US Constitution sets the President's inauguration on January 20. However, January 20 this year falls on a Sunday, so President Obama must be sworn in twice before Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Roberts.
Earlier in the day, US Vice President Joe Biden was sworn in for his second term in a ceremony presided over by Supreme Court Chief Justice Sonya Sotomayor, attended by several members of Mr. Biden's family.
Placing his hand on the Bible, Mr. Biden pledged to “support and defend the US Constitution against all enemies at home and abroad”./.
