Philippine President: Visiting China is only for economic reasons

At the same time, Mr. Duterte once again proposed strengthening defense relations with longtime ally Washington.
“You know that I was in China last week. And I want to assure you, it was all about economic things. We are not talking about arms. We are also avoiding talking about alliances…”, President Duterte told Japanese businessmen.
Duterte's visit to Japan comes amid growing concerns about his foreign policy, following recent statements attacking the US ally and proposing negotiations with China.
“I want to make it clear to all that the Philippines will not choose to quarrel with our friends and neighbors. As for me, it is time for a President to have the courage to face his own values and dignity as a human being,” Duterte added.
