"Step by step, we will continue to follow our own path to return to Europe and break the chains with Moscow. As promised, from April 1, after completing all official procedures, we will end the so-called basic agreement with Moscow, which cannot eliminate its imperial ambitions," Poroshenko wrote on Sunday (March 31) on his Facebook page.

President Poroshenko also wrote that "only the end of Moscow's aggression, firm guarantees of its non-repetition and the restoration of respect for the principles of international law can open the door to a truly fair, bilateral dialogue based on unconditional respect for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity."

According to the Ukrainian side's plan, on April 1, 2019, the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between the Russian Federation and Ukraine from May 31, 1997 will end. This is a basic document on Russia-Ukraine relations, which affirms the strategic partnership between the two countries.
