President Trump may withdraw from the race for the White House

President Trump will probably drop out of the 2020 White House race if he doesn't have a chance to win, a Republican insider said.

The above comment was made in an article by Fox News, citing a number of Republican congressmen concerned about President Trump's re-election prospects amid the "dismal" support rate for the US leader in surveys.

Joe Biden - the Democratic presidential candidate currently leads President Trump by an average of 9 points according to results from 2020 surveys by RealClearPolitics.

Notably, President Trump has lost support from older white voters, who are the Republican Party's base of support and were a key group in his 2016 victory. The US leader also trails former Vice President Joe Biden in nearly all swing states.

"It's too early to tell, but if the polls get worse, we could see him withdraw," an unnamed Republican told Fox News.

Charles Gasparino, the author of the Fox News article, said in a series of tweets that he had spoken to “key figures” in the Republican Party about the information. One of those figures described President Trump’s mood as “unstable” as his chances of winning a second term increasingly dim.

Another Republican source even suggested the possibility of Trump withdrawing.

"I heard about this exchange but I still doubt its accuracy. I bet Trump will withdraw if he believes there is no chance of winning."

President Trump has repeatedly criticized polls showing him trailing Biden. Last month, Trump tweeted that Fox News “should fire their Fake Pollsters. Fox has never had an accurate poll.”

On June 29, President Trump also wrote on Twitter: "Sorry to inform the Do Nothing Democrats that I am doing very well in my internal polls. Just like in 2016, the New York Times polls are Fake! The Fox News polls are a Hoax! Do you think they will apologize to me and their subscribers again when I win? The people want Law, Order and Safety!"

However, polls from different polling organizations have shown similar results, with high disapproval of Trump’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the George Floyd protests.

A recent Washington Post-Ipsos poll found that 36% of Americans approve of Mr Trump's handling of the protests, while 62% disapprove.

A New York Times-Siena College poll found that 58% of Americans disapprove of Trump's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, while only 38% of those polled approved - the worst ratio since the crisis began.

President Trump's campaign has called reports that the president will withdraw "fake."

"People should know that media polls consistently misjudge President Trump. They undersample Republicans and fail to account for likely Trump voters when making such misjudgements," Trump campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh told Fox News.

Tim Murtaugh also said that the polls don't reflect anything because just like in 2016, if the polls were accurate, the person in the White House now would be Mrs. Hillary Clinton.
