“A lot of people ask me why I put rich people in charge of the economy. I say it’s because they’re going to take care of the country. They don’t need the money anymore,” President Trump explained to supporters at the US Cellular center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
“They gave up a lot to take this job. When we got them, we got brilliant business minds, genius, and that’s what we need. We can’t let the world take advantage of us anymore,” Trump continued.
“I love everyone, rich or poor, but in special positions in the cabinet, I don’t want poor people. Do you think that makes sense?”, he stressed.
However, the above statements are quite contradictory to what Mr. Trump said during the 2016 presidential election campaign. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Mr. Trump criticized opponents such as Ted Cruz and Hillary Clinton for being "controlled" by businessmen on Wall Street.
“I know the people on Wall Street. I’m not going to let them get away with it. Wall Street has done us a tremendous amount of damage,” Trump said during a campaign rally in Iowa last year.
After becoming US president, Mr. Trump was criticized for appointing experts with ties to Wall Street to government positions, including former Goldman Sachs expert Steven Mnuchin being appointed as Treasury Secretary, Goldman Chairman Gary Cohn becoming chief economic advisor, and Goldman CEO James Donovan becoming Deputy Treasury Secretary./.
