Torres debuts, Atletico Madrid defeats Real Madrid 2-0 in King's Cup
Fernando Torres was immediately introduced after a lavish presentation ceremony in front of 45,000 Atletico Madrid fans.
Fernando Torres' 59 minutes on the pitch were not perfect, as he did not directly contribute to any goals. But compared to the person who has been wandering around AC Milan like a ghost, it was a great encouragement for this striker.
Torres played up front with Antoine Griezmann and played well with Atletico Madrid's defensive counter-attacking style. The strikers dropped deep. The midfield fought fiercely. The defense was crowded. Real Madrid had a lot of possession, but could not approach Atletico's penalty area, could not create dangerous situations.
Real Madrid had 67.9% of the ball possession. They had 10 shots, compared to 9 for the home team Atletico.
The match gradually drifted in a frozen state. Until a situation broke the ice: Raul Garcia wisely leaned against Sergio Ramos who was marking behind and fell. Penalty! Ramos was bewildered, not understanding what was happening, while the whole Calderon cheered. Garcia's cunning tricked Ramos. It was Raul Garcia who stepped up to successfully take the penalty, turning the match. It was the 58th minute.
Torres was more energetic, while Ronaldo lazily watched his team being "tortured".
With the deadlock, Carlo Ancelotti sent Cristiano Ronaldo onto the field. Atletico Madrid sent Koke, Arda Turan and Mario Mandzukic onto the field. The game did not change. Real Madrid attacked frantically to find an equalizer, but paid the price.
A simple corner kick, but when it hits the feet of an Atletico Madrid player, it is an extremely powerful weapon. Gimenez jumped higher than everyone else, heading the ball past goalkeeper Navas. Diego Simeone celebrated wildly. Carlo Ancelotti was stunned. Although Atletico Madrid used corner kicks extremely effectively, Real Madrid could not resist. That was the 6th time in the last 10 derbies that Atletico Madrid scored from a header.
The second goal came in the 76th minute, and from then on, the match was dominated by Atletico's defensive efforts. A lethargic and frustrated Real Madrid could do nothing to change the situation. They accepted a 0-2 defeat. The return leg will take place at the Bernabeu on January 15.
