Tottenham lost 1-3 at home

By the 71st minute, the score at Wembley was still 1-0 in favor of the home team, and Tottenham seemed to have another victory. But after Wolves equalized 1-1 from a corner kick in the 72nd minute, Pochettino's students could no longer control the situation. In three consecutive minutes from 84 to 87, Tottenham let Jimenez and Helder Costa score and had to leave the field with a 1-3 defeat.

This result means Tottenham have lost their fifth Premier League game this season. Having risen strongly to be considered a rival to Liverpool and Man City in the championship race, Pochettino and his team are in danger of falling behind. Regardless of the result of their next match against Arsenal, Liverpool will still be at least six points ahead of Tottenham. Meanwhile, Man City can move up to regain second place in the table if they win at Southampton on Sunday, December 30.

Tottenham can only blame themselves for falling into the situation of "holding the gold but letting it fall" and shooting themselves in the foot on the way to the championship. The match at Wembley Stadium in the 20th round of the Premier League started very favorably for them. Pochettino's students controlled the ball superiorly in the first half (67%), pressed the field, continuously threatened the Wolves goal, and easily broke up the opponent's attacks.

The opening goal in the 22nd minute was a worthy reward for that superior play, and showed the strongest points in Tottenham's style of play. Harry Winks stopped Wolves' attack, passed the ball to Son Heung-min. The ball then fell to Harry Kane, who handled it with class. Kane twisted beautifully, got past the defender, switched the ball from his right foot to his left, then curled a beautiful shot from about 20 meters into the far corner, beating goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

Before hosting Wolves, Tottenham were on a 39-game unbeaten run in the Premier League against newly promoted teams. History also did not favour Wolves - last season's Championship champions - to cause a surprise at Wembley, as they had only won two of Tottenham's nine Premier League matches. But the surprise came from Kane and his teammates' inexplicable slump after the break. Tottenham could not even muster a shot in the second half and continued to be sloppy in defence for the final 25 minutes of the match.

Wolves did not waste the gift from the home side. In the 72nd minute, taking advantage of Tottenham's defense's lack of man-marking, center-back Willy Boly jumped high to receive a corner kick from his teammate, heading the ball hard to equalize 1-1. 12 minutes later, in a quick counter-attack, Raul Jimenez defeated Hugo Lloris with a shot from the edge of the 16m50 area. Before Tottenham could recover from this loss, Wolves added the decisive blow. Still from a counter-attack, substitute Helder Costa rushed up, touched the ball just dangerously enough to drive into the far corner, sealing a 3-1 victory for the visitors.

In the next round, Tottenham will have the opportunity to return to winning ways when they host Cardiff on January 2.
