Dien Bien Phu City announced the naming of a street after Vo Nguyen Giap.

On the morning of April 25, the People's Committee of Dien Bien Phu City coordinated with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Office of the People's Committee of Dien Bien Province to organize a ceremony to announce the decision to name Vo Nguyen Giap Street and 7-5 Square.

The ceremony was attended by leaders of the Provincial Party Committee, People's Committee, People's Council, Fatherland Front and representatives of socio-political organizations of Dien Bien province; representatives of Ba Dinh district (Hanoi). Also attending the ceremony were Mrs. Vo Hanh Phuc and Mr. Vo Hong Nam (son of General Vo Nguyen Giap) and some relatives. A large number of ethnic people of Dien Bien province also came to witness the ceremony.

Speaking before announcing the two decisions, comrade Nguyen Van Du, Chairman of Dien Bien Phu City People's Committee affirmed that renaming 7-5 Street, the main road of Dien Bien Phu City to Vo Nguyen Giap Street and the Cultural Conference Center Hall to 7-5 Square is very meaningful; it is the legitimate aspiration of the people of all ethnic groups in Dien Bien Phu City and Dien Bien Province; expressing gratitude for the great contributions of General Vo Nguyen Giap. "On behalf of the Party Committee, government and people of all ethnic groups in Dien Bien Phu City, we promise to do our best to exploit, use, preserve and maintain these two works to be durable and beautiful, worthy of the trust that the Provincial Party Committee, People's Committee and people of all ethnic groups in Dien Bien have given us", comrade Nguyen Van Du said.

Authorized by the People's Committee of Dien Bien province, comrade Tran Thanh Ha, Chief of Office of the People's Committee of Dien Bien province, announced Decision No. 05/2014-UBND on renaming 7-5 Street to Vo Nguyen Giap Street and Decision No. 06/2014-UBND on renaming the Cultural Conference Center Square to 7-5 Square.

Vo Nguyen Giap Street in Dien Bien Phu City is nearly 7km long, with a road surface width of 32m. The starting point of the road is calculated from Huoi Pha Bridge - route 71+286 and the end point of the road is the concrete bridge bordering Dien Bien District - route 78+251.4. This road passes through Him Lam, Tan Thanh, Muong Thanh wards of Dien Bien Phu City, where fierce battles took place in the Dien Bien Phu Campaign in the past, and is parallel to National Highway 279 going straight to Tay Trang international border gate. Previously, in response to the wishes of the people of all ethnic groups in Dien Bien, on April 1, the 10th session of the People's Council of Dien Bien Province (term XIII) passed a Resolution of the People's Committee of Dien Bien Province on this matter.

Mr. Vo Hong Nam was moved when expressing his gratitude to the Party Committee, the government, and the people of all ethnic groups in Dien Bien for General Vo Nguyen Giap and the thousands of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. Mr. Nam said that this event was even more meaningful when it was held on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory. Mr. Vo Hong Nam then reiterated General Vo Nguyen Giap's advice to the Party Committee, the government, and the people of all ethnic groups in Dien Bien province on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory (April 2004). The General hoped that all levels, sectors, and the people of all ethnic groups in Dien Bien would unite, inherit, and promote the heroic revolutionary tradition, and preserve the historical relics of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign to educate future generations. "My father and his fallen comrades, along with the veterans, have fully fulfilled the Ten Military Oaths," Mr. Vo Hong Nam affirmed.
