A restaurant and a scrap yard were burned down in a fire that broke out at 8:30 a.m. on April 9 on Nguyen Thi Dinh Street (Cat Lai Ward, District 2, Ho Chi Minh City).

At the scene, flames and billowing smoke rose from inside the restaurant. The building was built of light materials so it soon caught fire and spread to the adjacent scrap yard filled with flammable materials, creating a large fire.

The scene of the fire. The fire started from the restaurant (arrow) and spread to the scrap yard.

No one could intervene with the available means because the fire spread too quickly…Local residents said that before the fire, a loud explosion came from the restaurant's food preparation area.

Firefighting forces of District 2 and Cat Lai Industrial Park mobilized 6 fire trucks and dozens of soldiers to participate in extinguishing the fire.

It took more than an hour to control the fire and at 10am the fire fighting was still going on because the fire was still smoldering under the pile of scrap.

Two houses collapsed

Both houses were completely burned down. There are no damage estimates yet.

Initial information said that the cause of the fire was due to the restaurant's family members filling gasoline near the food preparation area, causing the fire. The person directly filling the gasoline was seriously injured and had to be hospitalized.

Traffic on Nguyen Thi Dinh Street was blocked to serve the fire fighting. The number of trucks and containers from Hanoi Highway to Cat Lai Port was congested on Dong Van Cong Street for nearly 3km.

In the direction of Cat Lai ferry, due to the increasing number of vehicles from Nhon Trach, there is a serious congestion. The route from Phu My bridge to Cat Lai is also quite affected.

It was not until nearly 11am after the fire was completely extinguished that traffic on Nguyen Thi Dinh Street was re-established.
