Ho Chi Minh City will build many high-rise parking lots.

With the advantages of only requiring a small land area, simple steel structure, automatic parking technology, safety..., high-rise parking lots are expected to contribute to relieving the "thirst" for parking spaces in Ho Chi Minh City.

Ho Chi Minh City currently has nearly half a million cars and more than 5 million motorbikes, not to mention the more than one million vehicles of all kinds traveling in and out of the city every day. Therefore, the need for parking spaces for residents is very urgent.

Since 2003, the City People's Committee has had a policy of building underground parking lots to solve the problem of vehicle parking. 4 underground parking lot projects are Le Van Tam, Trong Dong, Hoa Lu and Tao Dan are being implemented. Of which, the Le Van Tam project with a total investment of more than 100 million USD by the Underground Space Development Investment Joint Stock Company (IUS) was started in 2010. But then it was "shelved" for nearly 2 years due to too many procedures.

It is expected that this project will be restarted next August and completed in 2015. As for the Dong Son project, according to the investor, if the procedures are completed early as planned, it can also start construction this year.

Along with researching and building underground parking lots, Ho Chi Minh City plans to build more multi-story parking lots in the central areas of Districts 1, 3, 5... to solve the shortage of parking spaces and gradually eliminate the current practice of using the roadway as parking lots.

The automatic car parking technology works on the principle that after the car is brought into the room, the system will automatically park it, the driver does not need to do anything other than press the car number button. When there is any problem, the system will immediately alert the processing center. Because the car does not operate itself, it does not cause pollution from vehicle waste, avoiding the risk of fire and explosion. When there is a risk of fire, the risk of casualties also does not occur because the automatic car park is unmanned.

"Only a very small area of land is needed to deploy, the steel truss structure is quite simple so Vietnamese companiesMalehas been proactive in terms of technology. This technology can be applied to office buildings, apartments or villas with many cars but little parking space," said Mr. Vu Huy Thang, General Director of Billco Joint Stock Company.

Sharing the same view, Ms. Nguyen Thi Bao Quynh, Deputy General Director of Dong Duong Group, said that the automatic parking system is the optimal solution to solve the long-standing problem of parking shortage. This system is used by many countries, most of which are Korea and Japan. On the same area, the number of cars that can be parked automatically can increase from twice to 20 times compared to the number of cars parked in the conventional self-driving style.

According to Mr. Phan Thanh Nam, Director of the Industrial and Transport Development Investment Company (Tracodi), the advantage of multi-storey parking lots is that they are quick to construct (average about 5 months), built in the form of a prefabricated frame into one, two or more floors depending on the location and space available. When vehicles enter the parking lot, the entry and exit of vehicles are controlled by equipment, allowing for lifting, rotation, horizontal and vertical movement according to the layout of the parking lot. In addition, the investment capital is much lower than that of underground parking lots.

In Vietnam, automatic parking technology has been applied at Thao Dien building (Binh Thanh), Hai Van Nam building, 10 Nguyen Hue building (District 1)... The underground parking project at Trong Dong stage will also apply this technology. However, these high-rise parking lots are reserved for each building or apartment building. Therefore, the City People's Committee wants to have public high-rise parking lots to serve the city's large population.

According to investors, they have prepared equipment and have requested the HCM City People's Committee to have preferential policies in financial matters and introduce vacant land locations to build multi-storey parking lots.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Hung, Deputy Director of the Department of Planning and Architecture of Ho Chi Minh City, highly appreciated the multi-storey car parking technology and said that it is completely possible to deploy it on roads with wide sidewalks. According to Mr. Hung, if the city has good support policies on procedures, reasonable parking price regulations... it can attract households or businesses to invest in multi-storey car parking lots for rent, contributing to solving the city's car parking shortage.

According to Mr. Bui Xuan Cuong, Deputy Director of the Department of Transport, although this parking lot has many advantages, the choice of construction location must be appropriate and not affect the city's planning, especially the metro line. In addition, these parking lots must avoid areas with frequent traffic jams and be suitable to the needs of each locality. The Department is reviewing vacant land areas to build multi-storey parking lots in the near future.
