Ho Chi Minh City pilots electricity production from waste
The factory located at Phuoc Hiep landfill (Cu Chi) has a capacity of 200 kg per day, using food waste from the solid waste classification program at source.
The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just agreed to allow a Japanese company to cooperate with the City Urban Environment One Member Co., Ltd. (Citenco) to deploy a pilot model of a plant to treat biodegradable organic waste to regenerate energy for electricity generation.
The factory has a capacity of 200 kg per day, using food waste taken from the Solid Waste Classification program in Ben Nghe ward, District 1.The pilot model is located at Phuoc Hiep landfill managed by Citenco (belonging to the Northwest Solid Waste Treatment Complex, Cu Chi district) witharea of about 300 m2.

City leaders also required these two companies to properly and fully implement environmental protection measures and return the clean site after the trial period ends. The parties must commit to cooperate in implementing the pilot model without any connection to the implementation of the subsequent project (if any).
TDuring the testing process, if environmental pollution occurs, it must be stopped and the responsibility to remedy the pollution must be taken. The trial period is 8 months from October.
According to statistics from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Ho Chi Minh City, the city generates about 7,600 tons of garbage every day and currently 75% of the garbage is treated by landfill technology at Da Phuoc landfill (Binh Chanh district).
Waste sorting at source is still very limited, although it has been piloted many times, but currently only a few wards are implementing it. The reason is the lack of investment in a synchronous sorting system, from trash bins in each family, means of transport with separate compartments and landfills must classify and recycle according to requirements.
