Ho Chi Minh City: Car and motorbike registration fees skyrocket
Starting tomorrow, September 1, the first-time registration fee for cars in Ho Chi Minh City will increase 5.5 times to VND11 million. The registration fee for motorbikes will also increase 1.5 times compared to the current rate.
Specifically, according to the new regulations just issued by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the fee for issuing new registration papers with license plates for road motor vehicles in Ho Chi Minh City for cars with 10 seats or less that are not used for transportation business will increase from the current VND2 million to VND11 million; for separately registered semi-trailers and trailers, the fee will increase from VND100,000 to VND150,000. The fee for issuing new registration papers for other types of cars remains at VND150,000.

Not only for cars, motorbike registration fees in Ho Chi Minh City have also increased by 1.5 times compared to current regulations. Specifically, the new motorbike registration fee is calculated based on the registration fee calculation price: Vehicles worth less than 15 million VND will have a new fee of 750 thousand VND, an increase of 250 thousand VND; vehicles worth from 15-40 million VND will increase from 1 million to 1.5 million VND; and vehicles worth over 40 million VND will have a new fee increased from 2 to 3 million VND.
Thus, after the adjustment, Ho Chi Minh City is the locality with the second highest registration fee for cars with less than 10 seats and motorbikes (except motorbikes worth less than 15 million VND) in the country, after Hanoi. Currently, Hanoi is applying a new registration fee for cars with less than 10 seats of 20 million VND; for motorbikes under 15 million VND, the fee is 500 thousand VND, from 15-40 million VND, the fee is 2 million VND and over 40 million VND, the fee is 4 million VND.
The first registration fee for cars with less than 10 seats in Ho Chi Minh City is also applied at 10% like other provinces and cities, except for Hanoi which applies 12%. The registration fee for used cars applied nationwide is 2%.
