Hmong women's clothing

Mong women's costumes do not show off the beauty of the body through cutting and sewing techniques to clarify the body lines like Thai and Tho women... but mainly the beauty is expressed in decoration, color and pattern. Mong women are very skillful in the art of creating costumes. Mong people evaluate the talent, beauty and virtue of women through their ability to embroider and weave, through the costumes in festivals: "If you want to know a good person, look at the kitchen, if you want to know a beautiful person, look at the clothes". Women who are good at sewing and embroidering are highly regarded and respected by the whole community and embroidering is a compulsory profession passed down from generation to generation. Before becoming a daughter-in-law, the mother gives her daughter a set of clothes as a dowry. When she gets married, the girl embroiders and weaves clothes to give to her mother and mother-in-law. A woman is considered rich if she has many beautiful clothes and jewelry.

When embroidering, the Mong women have a rich imagination, they do not have a model but still embroider beautiful patterns. In particular, the fabric grafting technique is quite unique and attractive, creating different color zones on the collar, sleeves, chest band, skirt hem, and apron. In addition, they also use the technique of grafting plastic and silver beads onto the costumes.

Mong women's costumes include: skirt, shirt, scarf, belt...

The skirt is made of linen or raw fabric, white or indigo dyed, the skirt body is a piece of fabric 60cm wide, up to 7m long, people fold into many folds so that on the skirt pair there is only about 90cm. The skirt waistband is made from a piece of fabric 40cm wide, folded in half and sewn to hug the fabric body. To wear the skirt, people also have to sew and attach a strip of fabric nearly 2m long (depending on the size of the person) to the skirt waistband, when worn, it is wrapped around the waist. The part where the 2 skirt flaps meet is in the front and is covered by a bib about 80cm long, 35cm wide, the bib is held up by a belt embroidered with beautiful colorful patterns, not only on holidays but also on normal days, people wear many fabric belts, it has the function of supporting the basket when going to the fields... or carrying children. Some people even have a pad in the middle of the "layer" of the belt.

Along with the skirt and belt, the Mong women's costume also includes a lu so shirt made of traditional linen or light-colored silk. The shirt has a short, stiffer round neck than a man's collar. The front flap is usually about 10cm longer than the back flap. The sleeves are usually small, with a different colored border and embroidered patterns at the elbows. At the end of the sleeve, there is a piece of fabric of a different color inside that is pulled out. There are 2 pieces of fabric about 3cm wide, red or yellow, placed in front of the shirt. Behind the collar, there is a square piece of fabric called "da so", embroidered with patterns, decorated in layers, with meticulous borders, and very beautiful colorful colors.

The scarves tied around the waist also come in 3 different colors, each about 1.2 to 1.5 meters long, about 20 to 30 centimeters wide, including 3 colors: blue, red, yellow. These scarves are usually made of thin fabric like silk, with tassels at both ends and can be embroidered with elaborate patterns and decorations.

Mong women often wrap a very long mahogany-colored scarf (dong pu) on their heads. The scarf is wrapped quite intricately in many layers, with a white strip of cloth often wrapped around the outside and between the layers.

The traditional costumes of Mong women are very unique, elaborate, and colorful, expressing the desire to surpass the colors of nature, to honor and affirm the beauty of people, and still retain their identity despite many changes in life.
