(Baonghean.vn) - "Raising snails must absolutely follow nature. The thicker the grass bank, the more snails will come to the bank to lay eggs," said Mr. Tran Quy Bao.

Born and raised in the fields, after getting married, the couple worked hard from dawn to dusk, hoping to find a way to escape poverty. After a period of experimental research, Mr. Tran Quy Bao, hamlet 2, Duc Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district, realized that his hometown's land was suitable for black apple snails - a specialty that attracts gourmets and is consumed strongly in both winter and summer.

Black apple snails live in ponds, lakes, and shallow streams. With an abundant amount of calcium, apple snails are an ideal food to provide calcium for the body, nourish strong bones, and can also support height growth in growing children. In addition, snails are also a food that helps cool the body, detoxify, and relieve hangovers...

In early 2018, after getting seeds from Tuyen Quang, Mr. Bao invested 600m2pilot farming. Thanks to diligent research, hard work, and technical support from the staff of the Nghe An Provincial Gardening Association, the apple snails have grown well.

Mr. Bao said: "Raising snails must absolutely follow the natural law, the more dense the grass banks are, the more snails will come up to the banks to lay eggs. The pond is designed with a deep center, the surrounding area must be shallow, with a length like a ditch, when it is cold the snails will go deep into the mud to hibernate, when it is cool the snails will come up to the two banks, find food and mate, then climb up to the banks to lay eggs. The greener the pond banks are, the higher the success. Food for snails is cassava leaves, xuyen chi flowers, papaya leaves, papaya fruits, green jackfruit. All of them are chopped up and thrown into the pond, and the snails will come up to eat them all. These are all natural foods grown right on the banks, thanks to which the meat of farmed snails is as delicious as natural snails.

Many communes, officials and people came to learn the black apple snail farming model of Mr. Tran Quy Bao. Photo: The Thang

Accumulating experience in snail farming, in early 2020, Mr. Bao and his wife decided to expand the rented area to 20,000 m2commune land and then converted it to raise snails. He dug 15 ponds, of which 2 ponds with an area of 1,000 m2 were used.2used to raise snails, 2 ponds with an area of 400 m2 used to breed baby snails, 13 ponds with an area of 18,600 m2used for commercial snail farming.

Mr. Bao released 400 kg of snails for breeding, raising them according to scientific techniques. Every day he collected eggs and stored them in styrofoam boxes. After about 20 days, the snail eggs hatched, each egg hatched about 120 snails. He fed them duckweed, bran, green jackfruit, and chopped green papaya.

After 2 weeks, the snails are transferred to the nursery pond, carefully covered to ensure the temperature in the pond. Up to now, his pond system has almost covered the entire area with 1 million juveniles. Currently, the commercial snails of his farm are sold to restaurants in and outside the province at 70 thousand VND/kg. This year, with 15 to 17 tons of commercial snails, the family is expected to earn hundreds of millions of VND in profit. In addition, he also sells snail seedlings to localities and guides people on how to raise them.

To provide food for the snails and create shade, on the shore he grows bananas, papayas, and jackfruits. In the pond he also raises field crabs, nested button snails, and baby snails...
