Awarding ceremony of the 41st UPU International Letter Writing Competition

With the theme “Write a letter to an athlete or sports figure you admire to explain what the Olympic Games mean to you”, the contest received 932,519 entries from students across the country. After 5 rounds of judging, the Jury selected 1 first prize, 3 second prizes, 5 third prizes, 30 consolation prizes and additional prizes for the youngest contestant, ethnic minority contestant and visually impaired contestant.

Nguyen Dang Quy Minh, a 10A9 student at Nhan Chinh High School (Hanoi) won the first national prize in the 41st UPU International Letter Writing Competition in Vietnam.

The letter of Nguyen Dang Quy Minh sent to the mentally disabled athlete Nguyen Huu Ky Phong, 18 years old, Thua Thien Hue province, who won the gold medal in the 50m race, with a time of 10.50 seconds at the Athens Olympic Games (Greece) in 2011. The letter was highly appreciated by the jury for its many unique ideas, rich and emotional sentences; the ending is aesthetic and humane. Nguyen Dang Quy Minh's letter was translated into French by the Organizing Committee and sent to the Universal Postal Union (in Bern, Switzerland) to participate in the international competition.

At the award ceremony, Nguyen Dang Quy Minh shared: Through the UPU international letter writing competition, I have the opportunity to express my thoughts on current global issues. Through my letter, I want to send everyone the message: Each of us is born with hidden abilities and only we ourselves can awaken and develop those abilities. In life, winning is not everything, the important thing is that we dare to strive to surpass ourselves, achieve outstanding achievements to contribute to a better life.
