At the badge awarding ceremony, those present were moved to hear the victims and witnesses recount the brave actions of Nguyen Sy Phuc. On the afternoon of September 20, when school was out, Phuc and his friends Phan Minh Phong, Vo Trong Quyen, Nguyen Duy Vinh and Nguyen Van Long went to kill rats on the edge of the inter-commune road, where floodwaters had flooded the fields, so many rats had come up to escape the water.
Comrade Duong Hoang Vu - Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union awarded the Brave Youth badge to the representative of Phuc's family.
While engrossed in catching mice, Phuc's group of friends saw 5 young men on 2 motorbikes trying to cross the spillway, where the water was flowing rapidly. With his experience living near the spillway, Phuc warned the group of young men not to cross the spillway because it was too dangerous. However, one young man on a motorbike still decided to cross the spillway. After going a few meters, the motorbike stalled and was swept away by the water. Seeing his friend being swept away, 3 young men in the group tried to save him, but all 3 were drowned by the flood.
Seeing that, Phuc and his friends who were playing with rats also rushed out to save the victims. After struggling, Phuc and his friends were able to save 2 people to the shore. The other 2 people were struggling in the flood water. Phuc used a dry bamboo stick to throw out for the victims to hold on to but failed and he decided to continue diving into the flood water. This time, the water flow was too strong and Phuc was exhausted so he was swept away. At this time, the local people living nearby also ran to the spillway to try to save Phuc and the 2 young men struggling in the water, however, Phuc was swept away by the flood water and could not be found. Mr. Nguyen Sy Thanh, Phuc's father, was also present when the incident happened. Mr. Thanh was the one who jumped into the rushing water and saved 1 young man but when he turned back to save his son, it was too late...
Phuc is the youngest of three children, his parents are farmers, and his two older sisters had to drop out of school early to work abroad. Mr. Dinh The Tai, Deputy Secretary of Nghi Loc District Youth Union, said that next week, at the Nghi Loc 2 High School Youth Union Congress, the district youth union will award a certificate of merit and commend Phuc's bravery. In a series of activities towards the 57th Anniversary of the Vietnam Youth Union (October 15), Nghi Loc District Youth Union will continue to launch an emulation movement following the bravery and selflessness of Nguyen Sy Phuc among all youth union members in high schools as well as youth unions in communes and towns across the district.
