Children with hepatitis B are at risk of chronic diseases
Hepatitis B is a dangerous infectious disease caused by the hepatitis B virus. Currently, the most dangerous route of transmission of this disease is from pregnant mother to child.
According to information from the National Expanded Immunization Program, if a newborn is infected with the hepatitis B virus from its mother, the risk of developing chronic disease is 90% and about 25% of them will be at risk of liver cancer and cirrhosis.
To date, there is no specific medicine to treat hepatitis B. Therefore, hepatitis B vaccination within the first 24 hours after birth is the best way to prevent transmission of hepatitis B from mother to child.
If the injection is given late, the prevention of hepatitis B transmission from mother to child will be less effective. Therefore, after giving birth, mothers need to vaccinate their children against hepatitis B within the first 24 hours after birth.
The prevalence of this virus in Vietnam is 10-20%. Some studies show that the rate of this disease in pregnant women is over 10%.
Hepatitis B vaccine is very safe and has been used in many countries around the world. Hepatitis B vaccination for newborns within the first 24 hours after birth is the World Health Organization's strategy in preventing hepatitis B.
In Vietnam, hepatitis B vaccine has been administered to children in the expanded immunization program since 1997./.
