(Baonghean.vn) -On September 12 in Vinh City, Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital organized a workshop on "Some solutions to prevent and treat autism in children under 6 years old in Nghe An".

According to the investigation results of a group of doctors from the Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital in collaboration with Vinh Medical University, among 14,000 children under 6 years old in 7 districts and cities in the province, the rate of children with autism is 1.57%, equivalent to 1/64 children with this disease. The rate of children with severe autism is 0.69%, equivalent to 2,000/30,000 children (under 6 years old in the province) needing rehabilitation and reintegration treatment. Notably, children with autism in the highland areas account for a higher proportion than in urban, mountainous and plain areas. Nearly 3/4 of children with autism are boys. In the past 20 years, the number of children under 6 years old with autism in the province has tended to increase.

The workshop also pointed out the limitations in the prevention and treatment of autism in children. Up to now, the province has not had a center for examination, detection, consultation and treatment of autism in children, but has only established a rehabilitation room (at the Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital). On the other hand, the propaganda work to raise awareness of autism in children in the community is still limited, so there are still many children who have not been detected, diagnosed and treated early for autism.

From that reality, the Workshop also proposed solutions to prevent and treat autism disorders for children under 6 years old from now until 2015 in the whole province, focusing on the following contents: increasing human resources for the Department of Neurology and Rehabilitation (Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital) to meet the requirements of treatment and teaching children on-site and at home; training specialized staff in child psychiatry; deploying more clinics and psychological treatment in the Department of Neurology and Rehabilitation to examine and treat outpatients, screen and detect autistic children early; Building a training program for preschool teachers and parents to understand autism, how to detect and teach autistic children. At the same time, opening training classes on teaching skills for preschool teachers and classes on how to play with children for parents.
