Over 15% of surveyed students had problems with emotional expression and social skills; hyperactivity was observed in 5% of primary school students. One cause of mental disorders in children is gaming addiction, substance abuse, bullying, and excessive tutoring.

According to Professor Harry Minas of the University of Melbourne (Australia), extra tutoring is a serious problem, contributing to mental health disorders not only in Vietnam. The intense competition among students is a serious issue, the consequence of which is that children no longer have time to be children. "Is it because of the poor quality of education that people have to send their children to extra tutoring everywhere like this?" Professor Harry Minas questioned.
