'Intellectuals, scientists, and artists need to maintain their character like pine and cypress'

On the morning of February 16, at the Party Central Committee headquarters, Party and State leaders held a meeting with intellectuals, scientists, and artists on the occasion of the Spring of Quy Mao 2023.

The meeting was attended by 330 delegates, including 210 delegates representing intellectuals, scientists, and artists with many achievements in their work.

With sincere feelings and a high sense of responsibility, delegates expressed many opinions hoping that the Party and State would continue to pay attention to, encourage, build and perfect mechanisms and policies, creating favorable conditions for the team of intellectuals, scientists and artists to continuously grow and contribute more to the country in the new situation.

Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association Nguyen Quang Thieu suggested that there should be investment in writers: "It is not about investing in money or living conditions, but the important thing is investing the Party and State's trust in writers." According to him, such investment will create the greatest inspiration and understanding of writers, because "when we put our trust in them, they will open their hearts, express their hearts and commit themselves."

Mr. Thieu believes that it is necessary to invest more in creative space, and at the same time affirms, "never before have artists had the right to create, the right to express, the right to criticize like now."

At the 2021 National Cultural Conference, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong placed great trust in the team of artists.

However, according to Mr. Thieu, in recent years, writers have not had works worthy of the nation and the times, while this is not only a personal demand but also a demand of the people, the nation, and the times.

Professor Dr. Nguyen Quoc Sy - a scientist in Plasma Physics and Technology, an overseas Vietnamese in Russia, talked about attracting and gathering intellectuals for the cause of industrialization and modernization of the country. He suggested that it is necessary to take intellectuals as the center and subject to decide the success or failure of this cause.

The characteristics of intellectuals are the ability to think independently, have scientific methods, objective criticism, and accept difficulties to serve the common interests of the community and the country. Therefore, he recommended creating a working, living, and contributing environment for intellectuals; authorities at all levels and the whole society should be receptive and listen to intellectuals. At the same time, objective evaluation, timely rewards, and reasonable treatment for intellectuals are needed; only then will they be willing to work, contribute, and devote themselves to serving the people and the country.

He also emphasized that "intellectual leaders must be people with heart, vision, knowledge, culture and absolutely loyal to the interests of the nation and people."

The nation's vitality, the nation's precious capital

Speaking at the meeting, Standing member of the Secretariat Vo Van Thuong was delighted to meet intellectuals, scientists, artists, and writers. The meeting was even more meaningful as it was preparing to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the birth of the Vietnamese cultural outline. He commented that the opinions expressed were all heartfelt, profound, and full of emotion: “Every time we meet you, we learn more about how to use words, our emotions are nurtured, we are inspired, and our dedication is urged… to contribute more.”

Through opinions from many fields, the Standing Secretariat found that the opinions expressed joy at the achievements of the country in recent times, along with practical and meaningful proposals for the coming year.

In 2022, the world, regional and domestic situation, in addition to advantages and opportunities, also has difficulties and challenges. Standing member of the Secretariat Vo Van Thuong reviewed some main features of the country's achievements.

On behalf of the Party and State leaders, Mr. Vo Van Thuong welcomed and commended the important contributions of intellectuals, scientists, and artists to the country's overall achievements in recent years.

The meeting demonstrated the deep concern of the Party and State for the fields of science and technology, education and training, culture and arts.

Talents are the vitality of a nation -When the vital energy is strong, the country is strong; when the vital energy is weak, the country is weak. Even when the country was facing difficulties, Uncle Ho paid special attention to attracting talents for the resistance war to save the country. The Standing Committee of the Secretariat quoted Uncle Ho's saying: "The country needs to be built. Construction requires talented people."

Today, with a population of nearly 100 million people and more than 5 million compatriots abroad, Mr. Vo Van Thuong believes that there will be many more talented and virtuous people. "The team of scientists, intellectuals, and artists is the national spirit and precious asset of the nation," the Standing member of the Secretariat emphasized.

Currently, the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations has gathered about 2.2 million intellectuals and scientists; and the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations has gathered more than 40,000 artists. In addition, there is a strong force of scientists, intellectuals, and artists working in many fields living, studying, and working abroad.

The Party and State always take care of and create all possible conditions to promote and unleash the research, creative and exploratory energy of scientists, intellectuals and artists in the spirit of sharing and multiplying the inspiration, aspiration and determination to build Vietnam.

To continue building, developing and promoting the mission and role in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland, the Standing Secretariat said that all levels must continue to thoroughly understand the position and importance of intellectuals, scientists and artists.

Focus on perfecting the institutional system in the direction of "creating motivation for intellectuals, scientists, artists to develop their capacity, creating opportunities and necessary conditions for contribution". Build mechanisms and policies to attract, employ, and treat domestic and foreign talents appropriately. In addition, it is also necessary to "respect and have appropriate mechanisms to improve the quality of expert advice and criticism on national issues".

Having worked in propaganda, Vo Van Thuong, Standing member of the Secretariat, said that intellectuals, scientists, and artists at every meeting and exchange had frank and sincere opinions; he agreed with and supported all reasonable recommendations and proposals. In his position as Standing member of the Secretariat, Mr. Vo Van Thuong affirmed that he would always listen to opinions and suggestions.
