June 7, 2013 22:32

(Baonghean.vn) -On the afternoon of June 7, Nghe An Oncology Hospital performed a transthoracic lung biopsy under the guidance of a CT scanner for patient Truong Cong Ngoan (63 years old, in Quy Hop district).

Master of Oncology Nguyen Dinh Tao said that this is a new, advanced technique that has been performed in developed countries for many years. In Vietnam, this technique has only been performed in a few large hospitals at the central level. Nghe An Oncology Hospital is the first hospital in the central region to perform this new technique under the technical transfer from doctors in Hanoi.

Doctors are performing a transthoracic lung biopsy on a patient on the afternoon of June 7.

Previously, to diagnose malignant or benign tumors in the lungs, doctors would have to perform a dissection to take a sample. With the transthoracic lung biopsy technique, doctors will use a needle to locate and take a sample from the tumor in the lung to diagnose the nature of the tumor as benign or malignant; what type of cell the tumor is, how malignant it is, and at the same time, they can conduct immunohistochemical tests to evaluate the disease at the genetic and molecular levels, etc.

This technique is performed within 10 minutes under the guidance of a modern, 64-slice CT scanner, painless, highly safe. This is the 8th patient to have this new technique performed at Nghe An Oncology Hospital.

Master Tao said that in the near future, Nghe An Oncology Hospital will deploy this new technique to biopsy and diagnose the nature of tumors in the brain, lungs, liver, kidneys, bones and many other organs.
