Although he only reigned for less than 10 years (1907 - 1916), Emperor Duy Tan left behind a typical image of a patriotic king. On September 5, 1907, after his father, King Thanh Thai, was forced to abdicate, Prince Vinh San ascended the throne at the age of 8, taking the reign name Duy Tan. In 1916, the Duy Tan uprising failed, and the French colonialists dethroned and exiled the king to La Resunion Island in the Indian Ocean.
On December 26, 1945, King Duy Tan died in a plane crash in Oubangui, Central Africa. In April 1987, thanks to the efforts of his children and the enthusiastic help of French Prime Minister Jaccques Chirac, the remains of Emperor Duy Tan were exhumed from Africa and brought back to Hue, to rest next to his ancestors...
